The digital ID for iPhone users, which was launched earlier this year, is now available for Android users. This digital ID allows users to add a digital version of their driver’s license or ID to their Google Wallet. It’s worth noting that this feature is particularly beneficial for members of the TSA PreCheck trusted traveler program, as they can use their smartphones as their ID at certain airport security checkpoints.
For PreCheck members who wish to use a digital ID at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, they should head to the South security checkpoint. By downloading the digital ID to their smartphones, travelers can simply tap their phones at the airport security checkpoint for ID verification, have their photo taken to confirm their identity, and then proceed to the security screening.
To obtain the Georgia Digital ID for Android users, they must have Google Wallet on an Android device that is running software version 8.0 or higher, as specified by the Georgia Department of Driver Services.
Regarding privacy and security concerns, the Georgia DDS assures that all data associated with the digital ID is securely stored on the user’s device, protected by both hardware and software security measures, and inaccessible to anyone other than the user. It’s important to note that, even with a digital ID, travelers are still required to carry their original physical driver’s license or ID, as the digital ID is not a substitute for the physical document. Additionally, it’s worth noting that law enforcement does not accept the Georgia digital ID.
The primary use of the digital ID is for TSA PreCheck, and it provides travelers with a convenient way to verify their identity at security checkpoints. In addition to the Georgia Digital ID, there are other options available to travelers to streamline the security process, such as Clear security lanes, which use facial recognition or fingerprints for identity verification instead of physical IDs. Delta’s Digital ID is a separate system that utilizes facial recognition for processing travelers who opt in and offers a dedicated line at the South security checkpoint at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.
