Atlanta, GA – Consumers in Georgia are being urged to check their freezers after more than 21,000 cases of frozen tater tots were recalled due to possible plastic contamination. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, McCain Foods USA Inc. initiated a voluntary recall on Jan. 12, 2026, involving select Ore-Ida and Sonic brand products. The affected products includes 650,000 pounds of Tater tots. The recalled items were distributed in Georgia and 28 other states, including Alabama, Florida, Texas, California and Ohio.

The FDA said the products may contain “clear, hard plastic fragments,” which could pose a choking risk or cause injury to the mouth or throat if eaten. The recall has been classified as a Class II recall, meaning the products could cause temporary or medically reversible health issues, though the risk of serious health consequences is considered low.

Consumers who have the recalled products are advised not to eat them and to return them to the place of purchase or discard them. Consumers with questions about whether their product is included in the recall can find more details on the FDA’s recall page or contact McCain Foods’ customer service at 1 (877) 804-6198 for guidance on refunds or disposal.
