Fresh Market salmonella outbreak in Buckhead under investigation by Department of Agriculture

Share

Health officials have confirmed that the Department of Agriculture is currently investigating a salmonella outbreak associated with the Fresh Market located on Roswell Road in Buckhead. As of October 26, 2023, between January and July of the same year, there were fewer than 15 reported cases of salmonella infections linked to this specific Fresh Market branch at 4405 Roswell Road.

Approximately half of the affected individuals required hospitalization, but fortunately, there have been no reported deaths.

According to a Department of Health official there have been no reports of illness since July. Because any potentially contaminated products have been removed from the store, the Department of Public Health (DPH) considers this outbreak to be resolved. Fresh Market cooperated fully with the DPH’s investigation into the outbreak.”

The salmonella outbreak at the Fresh Market has been traced back to chicken salad prepared in the store.

The Department of Agriculture’s investigation into this outbreak is ongoing, as they are determined to identify any violations of their rules and regulations at this establishment that may have allowed the outbreak to occur.

A representative from Fresh Market issued a statement, stating, “The Fresh Market is unwavering in our commitment to the safety and well-being of our guests, employees, and the communities we serve. We maintain a strong track record of food quality and safety across all our stores. Earlier this year, the Georgia Department of Agriculture investigated a limited number of reported illnesses, and, as part of our dedication to safety, quality, and compliance, we willingly collaborated with them to ensure the ongoing quality and safety of our food. We understand that the last case under investigation by the Georgia Department of Agriculture occurred months ago, and we await official closure of their case.”

The Georgia Food Act grants the Department of Agriculture statutory authority to oversee and inspect all retail food markets in the state to ensure compliance with the department’s rules and regulations, as explained by a Georgia Department of Agriculture official.

The investigation continues to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the Fresh Market salmonella outbreak in Buckhead.
