After President Joe Biden decided not to seek re-election and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee against Republican candidate Donald Trump, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama also endorsed Harris. In a video released on Friday, the Obamas expressed their full support for Harris, with Barack Obama stating that he and Michelle would “do everything we can” to help her win the presidency.
The endorsement highlights the strong bond and historical significance between the Obamas and Harris, who is the first woman, first Black woman, and first person of Asian descent to serve as vice president and now aims to make history as president. Michelle Obama added her personal support, expressing pride in Harris and emphasizing the historic nature of her candidacy.
Harris thanked the Obamas for their friendship and support, expressing her eagerness to campaign with them leading up to Election Day on November 5. An Associated Press survey indicated that Harris had already secured the backing of a majority of delegates to the Democratic National Convention, which is set to formalize her nomination along with her yet-to-be-named running mate.
The Obamas’ endorsement came after a careful approach, reflecting their role as influential figures within the Democratic Party. They remain key assets in fundraising and campaigning, supporting Democratic candidates across the country. President Biden’s earlier endorsement of Harris followed concerns about his own ability to win against Trump, paving the way for Harris to secure the party’s nomination.
Harris has secured a number of delegate commitments as she makes the rounds among core Democratic constituencies and raises millions of dollars along the way.
