Cobb Supeior Court Judge Sonja N. Brown Honored at 25th Annual Justice Robert Benham Awards for Community Service

Superior Court Judge Sonja N. Brown was recently recognized with the 25th Annual Justice Robert Benham Awards for Community Service. The honor was presented by the State Bar of Georgia for her unwavering commitment to volunteerism and public service.
The Benham Awards honor members who demonstrate a sustained dedication to community engagement beyond their legal duties. Judge Brown has served on the Cobb County Superior Court since January 1, 2023. Prior to her current role, she was a full-time Magistrate Court Judge in Cobb County.
As she accepted this distinuished honor, Judge Brown said, “I am truly honored to have received this award. Justice Benham is such a wonderful example of how to serve your community, and to be counted alongside him and these other wonderful honorees is humbling.”
Judge Brown added that she remains committed to serving Cobb County both on and off the bench and encourages fellow members of the legal profession to engage in community service. Her dedication to giving back is reflected in her active involvement with several nonprofit and civic organizations including the Tommy Nobis Center where she serves on the Board of Directors and Covenant House Georgia, where she has been long-time supporter. Since 2014, Brown has participated in the organization’s annual Sleep Out: Executive Edition, raising awareness for youth homelessness. In 2020, she chaired Sleep Out: Women Unite!, leading efforts to spotlight and support homeless young women.
Judge Brown’s legal career spans various roles in Georgia’s judicial system. She has served as Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney and Deputy Chief Assistant Solicitor-General in DeKalb County, as well as Chief Senior Assistant District Attorney in Fulton County. Before entering public service, she began her legal career as a Paralegal and Contracts Administrator, eventually becoming Staff Counsel at Convergent Media Systems Corporation in Alpharetta, Georgia.
Judge Brown holds a Juris Doctor from Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School, a Master of Arts in Christian Practice from Duke Divinity School, and a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Media Arts (Radio/TV/Film) from Clark Atlanta University.
