The Cobb County Sheriff’s office has reported the death of a detainee, Fernando Carr, at the Cobb Adult Detention Center. Carr, 29, from Austell, passed away on Monday. An autopsy by the Cobb County Medical Examiner is underway to determine the official cause of death. This marks the fifth inmate death in custody in Cobb County this year.
According to the Sheriff’s office, Carr had a documented heart condition and a drug addiction. While in the recreation yard, he experienced chest pains and seizures. Carr was then taken to the infirmary, where he received fluids. Although initially responsive and interacting with medical staff, he had another episode. Medical personnel initiated life-saving techniques, and Carr was transported by ambulance to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where he later died. The Sheriff’s office has notified the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and is conducting an internal investigation to ensure proper protocols were followed.
Records indicate that Carr was arrested by the Cobb County Police Department on November 1 for drug possession and weapons charges. He remained in jail due to ineligibility for bond. The arrest warrant alleges that Carr was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck without headlights in the early morning hours of November 1. In the truck, police discovered ecstasy pills and a Glock 27 handgun. Carr faced charges for the headlights violation, felony drug possession, felony possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and, due to a 2014 burglary conviction in Fulton County, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
