A Mableton man, Jose Razo, a 36-year-old resident of Mableton, was found unresponsive in his cell and later pronounced dead at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. The apparent cause of death is believed to be an aneurysm, pending official confirmation from the Cobb County Medical Examiner.
Razo’s journey through the criminal justice system began earlier in the year when he was shot by officers from the Cobb County Police Department. The police reported that Razo had pointed a gun at them during the encounter. Subsequently, he was in jail facing charges of aggravated assault and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
Razo’s cellmate observed his unresponsiveness and promptly called for help by pressing the emergency button in the cell. Jail staff and medical personnel initiated life-saving measures, and Razo was swiftly transported to the hospital. Despite their efforts, he passed away later that afternoon. Razo’s family was notified, and they were escorted to the hospital.
According to a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s office, Razo’s cellmate immediately called for help, prompting jail staff and medical personnel to perform life-saving measures before an ambulance took him to the hospital.
Medical personnel believe Razo suffered an aneurysm, but the Cobb County Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been enlisted to investigate the incident, and the Sheriff’s office is conducting its own internal investigation.
Razo, a native of Mexico, had a hold from Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Razo is the 6th inmate to die in custody this year.
