The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office has taken a proactive approach to address the mental health challenges faced by their law enforcement professionals by opening its first-ever Relaxation Room. Sponsored by the Cobb Sheriff’s Foundation, this dedicated space serves as a secure haven symbolizing Sheriff Craig Owens’ commitment to prioritizing the mental health and wellness of the Sheriff’s Office employees.
“In serving the people of Cobb County, we must make sure our employees are happy, healthy, and thriving,” said Sheriff Owens. Recognizing the inherent stress in law enforcement, the Relaxation Room is a tangible example of the Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to creating an inviting work environment for both sworn and civilian staff.
The Relaxation Room is thoughtfully equipped with features to promote mental well-being, including decorative and affirmation-based wall art, a breathing technique poster, a tranquil waterfall fountain, and partitions for privacy in massage chairs. The dimmable lighting with built-in phone charging capabilities allows individuals to create their preferred ambiance. Additionally, the room includes a dedicated lactation space for nursing mothers.
Capt. Yamina Holt, who spearheaded the creation of the Relaxation Room, emphasized the importance of self-care for employees facing challenging days. The room provides a space for individuals to clear their minds, relax, and find peace.
The Relaxation Room is available around-the-clock, reflecting the intentional design to be accessible whenever needed. Beyond this initiative, the CCSO has implemented a comprehensive Wellness Program focusing on Physical Support, Peer Support, and Spiritual Support. The program aids employees in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, provides counseling services, and offers spiritual guidance through chaplains and peer support counselors.
Since its establishment in 2022, the CCSO Wellness Program has successfully prevented suicides and mitigated health detriments, highlighting the positive impact of the peer support counselors.
