With no “rollback” of the millage rate proposed to match current spending levels, Cobb Chair Lisa Cupid and Commissioners are slated this week to adopt the fiscal year 2025 budget for Cobb County government as well as the 2024 millage rate.
Cupid’s budget proposal calls for $1.27 billion in spending, a $41.3 million increase in the general fund from the current fiscal year 2024 budget. The general fund millage rate will remain at 8.46 mills. However, because there is no “rollback” millage rate to match current spending levels, this constitutes a tax increase under state law. The property tax revenues in the proposed budget represent a 9 percent increase from fiscal year 2024.
During two of the three required budget public hearings, a number of citizens demanded that Cupid and the Commissioners reduce the millage rate after increased property tax assessments were mailed out to homeowners. Citizens also complained about the rising costs of daily living and how increased taxes are putting people out of their homes. Cupid did not offer any relief to their plea and seemed poised to push for passage of the increased budget.
Citizens are encouraged to attend the final hearing to have their voices heard on the budget.
The hearing is Tuesday, July 23, at 7 p.m., in the county office building located at 100 Cherokee Street in Marietta.
