CDC Director Susan Monarez Ousted After Brief Tenure

Share

CDC Director Susan Monarez has been removed from her post just weeks after taking office, marking the shortest tenure in the agency’s history. Monarez, the first non-physician to lead the CDC in 50 years, reportedly clashed with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over vaccine policy and her refusal to dismiss senior staff.

Her ouster follows the Aug. 8 shooting at the CDC’s Atlanta headquarters that killed DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose and further rattled an already demoralized workforce.

The White House said Monarez was terminated for being “out of step” with the administration’s agenda, but her attorneys insist only the president can remove her and argue she remains in the role. They accused Kennedy of “weaponizing public health for political gain” and targeting Monarez for rejecting “unscientific, reckless directives.”

Several top CDC officials resigned in protest, including Chief Medical Officer Dr. Debra Houry, who warned staff that “the science at CDC should never be censored” and reaffirmed that “vaccines save lives – this is an indisputable, well-established scientific fact.”

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) called for Kennedy’s removal, warning his embrace of conspiracy theories leaves the nation unprepared for future health crises.

Public health leaders say the leadership shakeup and staff exodus threaten the CDC’s credibility at a time of heightened health risks.
