Share

Aaron Johnson has officially qualified as a candidate for the District 2 City Council seat in South Fulton. On Wednesday, August 20, Johnson signed qualifying paperwork with the city clerk and held a brief news conference outside City Hall. He highlighted his experience in government at the local, state, and federal levels, noting his current position as Chief of Staff for the Atlanta City Council President Doug Shipman.

Johnson cited recent city controversies, including investigations into the mayor’s foreign travel expenses and the city’s police chief, as motivating factors for his campaign. He said he intends to focus on ethics, public safety, and growth management in the district.

“District 2 deserves leadership that is responsive, open, and focused on serving the community,” Johnson said during the news conference.

A longtime South Fulton resident, Johnson also announced the endorsement of former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, emphasizing her support for his candidacy.

The District 2 seat is being vacated by Councilwoman Carmalitha Gumbs, who is running for mayor. South Fulton is Georgia’s seventh-largest city and one of the fastest-growing in the metro Atlanta area.
