Atlanta City Council President won’t seek reelection

Share

Doug Shipman, Atlanta City Council President, announced that he will not seek reelection this year due to family medical issues that require his full attention. In a post on Instagram, Shipman expressed his commitment to continue serving in his current role through the remainder of his term, but emphasized that he could not, in good faith, ask voters to reelect him for another term given the personal challenges he is facing.

Shipman, who was elected to the City Council President position in 2021, stated that his responsibilities as a family member outweigh his ability to fulfill the demanding role for the next four years. While stepping away from the election, he reiterated his dedication to the community, emphasizing that he will remain active in Atlanta and continue to serve the city in various capacities. His decision comes as both the entire City Council and Mayor Andre Dickens face reelection this November.

Throughout his term, Shipman has worked to strengthen relationships within the council, improve council procedures, and advocate for key legislative issues impacting transportation, parks, infrastructure, and small businesses. His departure will open the door for new leadership in the City Council President role, which will be decided in the upcoming elections.
