Hollywood action movie and comedy star, Carl Weathers, has passed away at the age of 76.

Weathers was a former NFL linebacker who became a star playing nemesis-turned-ally Apollo Creed in the “Rocky” movies, facing off against Arnold Schwarzenegger in “Predator”, flexing his muscles as “Action Jackson”, and teaching golf in “Happy Gilmore”. Most recently, Weathers has starred in the Disney hit “The Mandalorian,” appearing in all three seasons.

The actor died on Thursday in his sleep. “Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life,” his family said in a statement. “Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”

Schwarzenegger wrote on Instagram message, “Carl Weathers will always be a legend. An extraordinary athlete, a fantastic actor, and a great person. We couldn’t have made ‘Predator’ without him. And we certainly wouldn’t have had such a wonderful time making it.”

Weathers had numerous roles, but was most associated with Apollo Creed, who made his first appearance as the cocky, undisputed heavyweight world champion in 1976’s “Rocky,” starring Sylvester Stallone. Stallone wrote in an Instagram message that included a video tribute, “We lost a legend yesterday. Carl Weathers was such an integral part of my life, my success. I give him incredible credit and kudos.”

Weathers had a diverse career that included both professional football and acting. Born in New Orleans on Jan. 14, 1948, he initially pursued his passion for acting during his early years. He played a variety of sports including boxing, football, soccer, wrestling and gymnastics.

He went on to play football in college at San Diego State University and helped the Aztecs win the 1969 Pasadena Bowl. After playing college football, he briefly played in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders. He continued his education and acting pursuits, eventually graduating with a B.A. in drama in 1974 from San Francisco State University. His diverse background laid the foundation for his successful acting career in Hollywood.
