Police nationwide send warning about gift card scam during holidays

As we celebrate the joyous holiday season, authorities are urging shoppers to remain vigilant against potential scams that threaten to steal the festive spirit. Nationwide warnings have been issued concerning a prevalent gift card scam known as “card draining.”
In this scheme, perpetrators discreetly copy vital information from in-store gift cards, returning them to the shelves for unsuspecting buyers. Once purchased, these compromised cards are exploited, with funds swiftly transferred to offshore accounts.
Police recently apprehended a man in California for tampering with over 5,000 Apple and Target gift cards at a local Target store.
Police say these operations are sophisticated, with modifications to the gift cards being nearly undetectable, even by trained professionals.
To safeguard against such scams, shoppers are advised to exercise caution when purchasing gift cards this holiday season.
Police also suggest that consumers consider avoiding gift card purchases altogether or take extra precautions when buying in-store by scrutinizing gift card packaging for signs of tampering or opening.
If any suspicion arises, it is recommended not to buy the card and promptly inform the store manager or service desk.
Let’s work together to ensure a joyous and secure holiday season for all, free from the interference of Grinch-like activities.
