Norman Sauce Appointed Interim Superintendent of DeKalb Schools, Brings Proven Leadership Experience

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga.—The DeKalb County School Board has officially appointed Norman Sauce as interim superintendent, effective Nov. 16, under a one-year contract. Sauce, who has served as acting superintendent since Oct. 9 following former superintendent Devon Horton’s indictment, brings extensive experience and a record of leadership within the district.

“The move ensures stable leadership and continuity in the district’s progress,” Board Chair Deirdre Pierce said in a statement. “Over the past month, Dr. Sauce has demonstrated strong leadership, a clear vision for student success, and a commitment to transparency and collaboration.”

Sauce assumes the role at a pivotal time for the district. On Nov. 14, during a board retreat, the district received a recommendation to maintain Druid Hills High School at its current site while modernizing it—a decision reflecting the ongoing initiatives Sauce will help shepherd.

A native of Long Beach, California, Sauce earned his doctorate in education from the University of Southern California in 2009, along with a master’s in education from UCLA and a bachelor’s degree in history from California State University, Long Beach. He has been serving in Georgia schools since 2012, including principal roles at Chamblee High School and Barnwell Elementary, as well as assistant principal at Roswell High School.

Before returning to DeKalb in 2022, Sauce served in Griffin-Spalding County School System as Executive Director of Student Support Services and Executive Director of Elementary Education. Within DeKalb, he previously held the position of Chief of Student Services prior to becoming acting superintendent.

The district also emphasized that Sauce underwent a comprehensive vetting process, including a full background check, professional credential verification, credit history review, and confirmation of eligibility for bonding and insurance policies.

With the new appointment, the DeKalb County School District seeks to maintain steady leadership and ensure that initiatives aimed at improving student outcomes continue without disruption.
