Fairburn Councilwoman Impeached Following Ethics Investigation

Council Seat Vacant After Ethics Breach Removal

FAIRBURN, Ga. — Residents of Fairburn are now watching city government navigate a rare and significant transition following the removal of Councilmember Samantha Hudson from office. The council voted unanimously to impeach Hudson after an ethics investigation found she improperly shared confidential city information.

The process began in late September when a formal complaint prompted the Fairburn Ethics Board—an independent citizen panel—to investigate. After reviewing evidence, the board concluded Hudson had violated city ethics rules and recommended her impeachment to the council.

At a special session on Oct. 30, the City Council convened as an Impeachment Council. Following a hearing and deliberation, the council voted 4-0 to uphold the Ethics Board’s findings and remove Hudson from office. In accordance with protocol, Mayor Mario Avery and Hudson herself abstained from the vote.

City officials stressed that the removal was necessary to maintain public trust and protect the integrity of Fairburn’s government. Hudson’s actions involved the unauthorized release of confidential personnel information, which violated provisions of the city charter and ethics policy designed to safeguard sensitive city matters.

While the decision resolves the immediate ethics concern, it leaves the council with an open seat and raises questions about continuity of governance. Residents may see delays or shifts in council initiatives until the vacancy is filled, particularly on personnel and legal matters where Hudson previously had influence.

Community leaders have expressed support for the council’s actions, emphasizing that transparency and ethical conduct are central to effective local government. At the same time, some constituents are concerned about the potential political ramifications of the vacancy and how the council will ensure full representation for all districts during the interim.

City officials say procedures for filling the vacant seat will be announced soon, giving residents clarity on how leadership continuity will be maintained.

“It’s important for Fairburn residents to see that ethical standards are enforced,” said a local civic activist. “Now the council has the responsibility to ensure the city continues to operate smoothly and fairly while moving forward.”
