ATLANTA, Ga. — Cobb County officially has a new police chief! On Tuesday night, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners confirmed James D. “Dan” Ferrell as the permanent chief of the Cobb County Police Department. Ferrell has proudly served Cobb County for nearly three decades and has been leading the department in an interim role since April, following the retirement of former Chief Stuart VanHoozer.
Surrounded by family, friends, members of the community, and fellow officers at the appointment ceremony, Chief Ferrell called the moment “the professional honor of my life.”
A Hometown Leader
Born and raised right here in Cobb County, Ferrell began his career with the department in 1996 as a uniform patrol officer — back when rookies had to wear khaki uniforms so “everyone knew you were new,” he laughed. Over the years, he has served in leadership roles across multiple divisions, including precinct command, SWAT, and internal operations. With 32 years in law enforcement, Ferrell’s experience and community ties run deep.
Building Stronger Connections
Chief Ferrell shared that one of his top goals is to strengthen trust between officers and the people they serve. “You have to communicate consistently,” he said. “Open, honest, and transparent communication with people makes our county safer.” He also wants to harness technology to make law enforcement more effective and efficient. “I’m excited to explore how technology can help us make our communities even safer in the years ahead.”
Supporting Those Who Serve
Ferrell made it clear that his vision includes caring for those behind the badge. “I want to make sure our officers have mental, physical, and financial wellness — and opportunities for professional growth,” he said.
A Family Tradition of Service runs in the Ferrell family. His father worked for Cobb County Police, and his brother, Marty Ferrell, is currently the police chief in Canton. “I guess I have a great family tree,” Chief Ferrell joked. “I had to get promoted just to hold my own with my brother.”
Praise from County Leadership
Cobb County Manager Jackie McMorris and Public Safety Director Michae Register both commended Ferrell’s long and steady rise through the ranks. “He’s risen from patrol officer to sergeant, lieutenant, captain, and major,” McMorris said. “He truly represents what it means to grow within this department.” Register shared: “It has been an honor to lead public safety in Cobb County — bringing together our teams of professionals across police, fire, EMS and emergency management to serve our community every day. Chief Ferrell’s appointment reflects our commitment to continuity, innovation and community trust.”
Looking Ahead
Chief Ferrell said his focus will be on teamwork and a shared sense of purpose. “From day one, we’ll work together to build a unified vision of where this department is going,” he said. The Cobb County Police Department now serves over 760,000 residents across 345 square miles. Under Chief Ferrell’s leadership, the department will continue focusing on community partnerships, modern policing strategies, and keeping Cobb County a safe and thriving place to call home.
