Call to Action in Mableton to Prevent Displacement of Families

Residents who reside at Riverside properties, 575 Apartments, Residence of Riverside, Silver Creek Crossing Apartments, were placed in an impossible position. How were families expected to save rent money when many were already struggling to meet basic needs?
The apartment management company failed to clearly communicate where rent payments should be made, how payments could be made, and what guidelines existed for missed payments.
Vulnerable communities do not have extra savings readily available, and it is unrealistic and unfair to expect otherwise. This lack of communication created confusion and hardship that could have been avoided.
What this situation feels like to many residents is intentional neglect allowing rent to accumulate without guidance, then turning around and demanding full payment under the threat of eviction. All of this occurred while residents also witnessed ongoing maintenance issues being ignored.

This is a call to action. There must be shared responsibility and a realistic, humane plan put in place to prevent the displacement of families. Solutions must account for the lived realities of residents and provide clear communication, flexibility, and accountability.
As I previously stated, Chairwoman Cupid is well aware of how the late Chairman Mike Boyce was able to assist families in 2019 by stepping in with practical solutions during a housing crisis. That same level of leadership and commitment is needed now.
