Auburn University will honor one of its greatest players this fall when it retires the No. 2 jersey of Cam Newton, the Heisman Trophy–winning quarterback who led the Tigers to a national championship in 2010.
The ceremony is scheduled for October 11 during Auburn’s home game against Georgia. Newton will become just the fourth player in school history to have his jersey retired, joining an exclusive group that includes Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson, and Terry Beasley.
Newton’s place in Auburn football history was cemented during his lone season on the Plains. In 2010, he guided the Tigers to a perfect 14–0 record, an SEC Championship, and a victory in the BCS National Championship Game. His dynamic play earned him the Heisman Trophy and established him as one of the most electrifying players in college football history.
“Cam’s impact on Auburn football was immediate and unforgettable,” the university said in its announcement. “His leadership and playmaking ability helped deliver one of the most memorable seasons in program history.”
Born in Atlanta and raised in College Park, Newton starred at Westlake High School before beginning his college career at the University of Florida. After a season at Blinn College in Texas, he transferred to Auburn, where his breakout 2010 campaign became legendary.
Following his college success, Newton was selected No. 1 overall in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. Over an 11-year NFL career, he became a league MVP in 2015 and led the Panthers to Super Bowl 50.
In addition to his football career, Newton earned a degree in sociology from Auburn and has remained a visible presence in the Atlanta and Auburn communities.
The retirement of his jersey number will ensure that Newton’s contributions to Auburn football are permanently recognized. Fans will witness the ceremony at Jordan-Hare Stadium during one of the Tigers’ most anticipated games of the season.
