Shootout during armed robbery attempt in Cobb leaves 1 dead, 1 injured

Two men, Anthony Jones and Darius Butler found themselves looking down the barrel of a gun after attempting to rob two other men at gunpoint near Woodstock. The duo Jones, 28, and Butler, 20, were both injured after being in what police described as a shootout.

They attempted to commit the robbery at an apartment building on Buckline Court. Jones and Butler were also accompanied by a third suspect who was not publicly identified.

The police report says that on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at approximately 8:34 pm, precinct one officers responded to 5115 Buckline Court Woodstock, GA 30188, in reference to a person shot.

Upon arrival, officers located a black male, lying in front of this address suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. Preliminary investigation indicates that Anthony Jones (28, Marietta), Darius Butler (20, Cartersville), and a third suspect came to this address to commit an armed robbery against Michael Sonnichsen (25, Kennesaw) and Malik Darden (24, Woodstock). Michael and Malik fired rounds at the suspects in self-defense.

Police said that after the shootout, Jones was pronounced dead at the scene from his gunshot wounds, while Butler was injured. He is in police custody and faces several counts including aggravated assault, armed robbery and felony murder.
