Alpharetta, GA – Georgia Public Service Commission candidate Shelia Edwards participated in an election-focused event on Saturday hosted by the North Atlanta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., which featured U. S. Congresswoman Lucy McBath and a panel of local political leaders to discuss strategies for successful campaigns.
The event featured a panel discussion with State Representative Terry Cummings, Stockbridge Mayor Jayden L. Williams, and Peachtree Corners Councilwoman Ora Douglass, who shared their personal pathways to public office, offered campaign insights, and gave advice to aspiring candidates. Congresswoman McBath was the keynote speaker who shared her motivations for running for office and the importance of civic engagement, inspiring attendees with her story and vision.
During the event, Edwards shared with the audience her candidacy for the District 5 seat on the Georgia Public Service Commission, emphasizing her focus on reducing the rate increases that have been forced onto ratepayers by the PSC, utility accountability, affordability, and accelerating Georgia’s clean energy transition. “For too long, the Georgia Public Service Commission has acted like a protection agency for utilities instead of a protection agency for the people of Georgia. I’m running to change that,” was the message Edwards shared with those in attendance.
With two Democrats already serving on the Commission, the District 5 race could create a new Democratic majority, giving voters the opportunity to challenge repeated rate increases and ensure that utility decisions prioritize Georgia families. Edwards brings a strong record of leadership and political experience, including a successful statewide PSC primary win in 2022 and senior roles in Georgia Democratic campaigns. “This race is about more than one seat. Georgians deserve a commissioner who votes for people — not powerful utility companies — and I will be that commissioner,” Edwards added.
The election event highlighted the importance of local engagement and mentorship in politics. McBath and the local leaders encouraged attendees to participate in civic life and consider public service as a way to make an impact in their communities.
