Shelia Edwards Qualifies for PSC Race, Could Decide the Commission Majority

Share

Atlanta, GA — Community advocate and business owner Shelia Edwards qualified today to run for the District 5 seat on the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC). Edwards is seeking the critical third seat that could deliver a Democratic majority and reshape the Commission’s direction.

In announcing her candidacy, Edwards said, “For too long, the Georgia Public Service Commission has acted like a protection agency for utilities instead of a protection agency for the people of Georgia. I’m running to change that.”

With two Democrats already on the Commission, the District 5 race will determine whether voters create a new majority willing to challenge Georgia Power, stop repeated rate increases, and accelerate clean energy — or continue policies that favor corporations over families.

Edwards brings a record of leadership, advocacy, and proven campaign experience, including a successful statewide PSC Democratic primary in 2022, winning over two other opponents without a runoff.

She has also served in senior leadership roles within Georgia’s Democratic infrastructure, helping re-elect statewide incumbents and elect new candidates across the state. Her work has focused on issues affecting working families, seniors, and veterans, including housing affordability, consumer protection, and environmental justice.

“This race is about more than one seat,” Edwards said. “It’s about who controls decisions that affect every household in Georgia. If we win this third seat, everything changes. The era of rubber-stamping rate hikes must end. Georgians deserve a commissioner who votes for people — not powerful utility companies — and I will be that commissioner.”

Edwards says her campaign will focus on utility affordability, accountability for large energy users such as data centers, and accelerating Georgia’s clean energy transition.
