June 21st Run-Off: The next stop for unsettled races
Share

As the dust settles from the May 24th primary election, what’s left in its wake are unsettled races that are now headed to a June 21st runoff. Races have to be determined in both parties for the U.S. House, along with Democratic Party runoffs for lieutenant governor, secretary of state, other statewide races, and local races in Cobb County.
Georgia is one of 10 states in the U.S. that require a runoff after a primary if no candidate wins over 50% of the vote. In most of the rest of the country, the candidates with the most votes win, even if they receive less than a majority.
Senate Bill 202, the new voting law, reduced early voting for runoffs. The time allotted between elections was cut from nine weeks to four. This was driven by the Republican-led General Assembly that moved up the runoff date after Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock won runoffs for the U.S. Senate in early 2021. In addition, instead of giving voters three weeks of early voting, the new law only requires one week of early voting. Absentee voting is also available, but with the shortened window of time, the ability of voters to request and return their ballots has been diminished.
If you voted in the primary, you must vote in the same party during the primary runoff. Registered voters who skipped the primary can vote in either party’s runoff.
Voters are asked to come back out to cast votes in the following races:
