Cobb NAACP to host Juneteenth celebration on the Marietta Square

Share

The Cobb County NAACP, Cobb County cities, and other community organizations are hosting events to commemorate Juneteenth, which celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S with the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved African Americans in June 1865.

The NAACP’s annual Juneteenth Celebration events will be held on June 18-19 on the Marietta Square.  Friday’s event runs from 7-10 p.m. and will feature jazz, R&B, and spoken word performances with John Boy & Surround Sound closing out the evening. Saturday’s celebration is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will include over 80 vendors on the Square selling food, jewelry, and more. “Everybody’s welcome to come and celebrate and enjoy,” says NAACP President Jeriene Bonner-Grimes. Juneteenth is open to the entire community and she hopes to attract a diverse crowd to enjoy an array of awareness, education, and fellowshipping as we “embrace the significance of what Juneteenth commemorates as a day of freedom.

“The Juneteenth celebration is an opportunity to bring some healing and unity to our community,” said Bonner-Grimes

Free COVID-19 shots will also be available during Juneteenth as the NAACP is partnering with Walmart to offer vaccines on-site. Other organizations will be providing health screenings for diabetes and blood pressure. For more information on the events being planned by the NAACP, please call 770-425-5757.
