Mysterious dog illness spreading nationwide has made its way to Georgia

A new warning has been issued for pet owners across the country, including in Georgia, for a mystery illness affecting dogs that is spreading. The unknown respiratory illness is highly contagious and can be deadly for dogs, according to veterinarians.
The symptoms are reported to be similar to kennel cough, including coughing, sneezing, nasal and/or eye discharges, and lethargy.
The potentially fatal respiratory illness begins as a cough that can last for weeks. If antibiotics don’t help, your pet can develop severe pneumonia and struggle to breathe. Some dogs have died from the disease.
Experts say the condition is highly contagious, with canines who visit daycares, dog parks, groomers, or boarding kennels most at risk.
The illness was first reported in Oregon in August, with over a hundred reports from veterinarians. Kevin Snekvik, the Executive Director of the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab, emphasized the importance of pet owners being aware of the symptoms and closely monitoring their pets.
Signs of the illness include fever, lethargy, and a cough that may become more productive and wet over time.
Pet owners are advised to take their dogs to the vet if they exhibit these symptoms. Vets can take samples that will be sent to a state lab for testing. Snekvik recommends avoiding dog parks and limiting contact with unfamiliar dogs. Additionally, he suggests considering alternatives to boarding pets during the holiday season if possible.
